Family history

Dr. Otto von Guggenberg heard about the successful healing methods of Sebastian Kneipp and, after he and so many other doctors couldn’t successfully treat their patients, they sent them to Bad Wörishofen, the home of Priest Kneipp. The success was so astonishing that Otto von Guggenberg decided to adapt to Kneipp’s method. His stay in Bad Wörishofen and his cooperation with Sebastian Kneipp made him reach the conclusion he would scientifically underpin the Kneipp method, as it was not being recognised by fellow doctors.

He was so positively surprised by the healing power of water that he decided to found a ‘water healing city’ here in Brixen in 1890.
After Otto passed away, his activity would be taken on, expanded upon and modernised by his sons Franz, Paul, and Hans.

After WWI, which had gravely affected the destiny of the family and establishment, Hans von Guggenberg took over sole management of the family business.

The South Tyrol Option Agreement and WWI once again put the existence of the family and the establishment on the line. During the war, the infrastructure was turned into an auxiliary hospital in Brixen.

In 1946, the establishment returned to its traditional purpose.
Hans von Guggenberg, supported by his son Markus, opened a doctor’s surgery and treated out-patients from Brixen and beyond with the Kneipp method.

The spa clinic was reopened between 1949-1959 under the expert leadership of Hans and Franz von Guggenberg, while Markus von Guggenberg managed the medical side of the clinic. His sister, Frosina von Guggenberg, stood by his side. She trained as a nurse in Florence between 1934 and 1937. After that period, she worked in the Red Cross Hospital in Naples and in the spa clinic in Brixen. When the clinic reopened in 1949, she came back as a nurse and an assistant dietician. Thanks to her forty-year-long activity at the establishment, she was one of the indispensable pillars of the family company.

In 1955, the public limited company ‘Kuranstalt Dr. von Guggenberg’ was dissolved to continue operating as a ‘regular company’.
From 1959, Markus, together with his aunt Erika von Guggenberg (nee von Jaksch) managed the affairs of the establishment.
In 1962, Markus took over the management with his wife Gertraud Mitterrutzner.
Markus von Guggenberg bought his siblings out and has since been the co-proprietor of the spa clinic together with his cousin, Dr Eberhard von Guggenberg (son of Franz and Erika v. G.) .
In the same year, he married Gertraud Mitterrutzner. Thanks to the devotion and medical skills of Markusm and his wife’s penchant and expertise for accountancy, the couple complement each other perfectly, giving the establishment a new lease of life.
In 1969, Erika von Guggenberg passed away at 77. She had worked at the spa clinic just before passing away, and her experience in tourism allowed the clinic to overcome hard times. After Erika’s death, the ‘regular company’ was turned into a limited company, a ‘Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung’.

Dr Markus von Guggenberg expanded and renovated the spa clinic together with his wife Gertraud between 1970 and 2000 many times. With help from his mother-in-law Maria Mitterrutzner, his sister Euphrosyne, and his cousin Eberhard von Guggenberg, they successfully led the family enterprise into the new century and generation.
Markus worked until a very ripe old age and patients and guests respected and loved him very much. We should also mention that he lived his life according to the teachings of Sebastian Kneipp.
Dr Eberhard von Guggenberg is still active to this very day, carrying out particular administrative tasks.

Maria Mitterrutzner worked at first as a sales assistant in Bozen and Meran at Fa. Necchi (sowing machines) and then as manager.
She started working at the spa clinic in 1961 thanks to her daughter Gertraud. At the beginning, she worked in all areas (including sowing curtains, upholstering furniture, lamps, and similar objects) and then served the establishment well for 44 years as accountant and receptionist.

Gertraud Mitterrutzner von Guggenberg started working at a young age as a secretary for one year and a half at the spa clinic. After that, she carried out a three-month internship in a medical laboratory in Bozen. Ultimately, she returned to work as a secretary on request of Markus von Guggenberg at the spa clinic. This is where she started her exemplary 55-year-long career. She manages the establishment with her children, Johanna and Laurenz.
