The cloister was founded in Pre-Roman times and was then adapted to the Romanesque and Gothic style. It represents the centre of the Cathedral neighbourhood with the surrounding buildings, the Cathedral, the Johanneskapelle chapel and the Frauenkirche church. The cloister is especially famous for its Gothic frescoes.
The first cloister was built around 1200, the small pillars of the arcades go as far back as then, and the building already featured frescoes. The light falls through the arched windows and the wall frescoes glimmer between the pillars.
